LEVITICUS CHAPTER 10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to his command.

So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD spoke of when he said: ‘Among those who approach me I will show myself holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.’ ”
Aaron remained silent.

Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.” So they came and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

I like the Tissot paintings. He doesn’t create drama with swirling flames and explosions of fire but focuses on the bodies of Aaron’ sons as they are brought down by the power of God, consumed but left with their bodies and garments intact. As always, he tells the stories with great impact.

Good morning, Dan - thanks very much for the fire from above - it was a purifying experience.

This report of Nadab and Abihu is one of the most complex stories in the Bible. Why did God kill them? It seems like they had good intentions in serving and praising the Lord, but obviously they failed.
Leviticus 10:9 may offer some explanation as to why these two had to die. Perhaps they had been drinking on the job.

More selections than expected with Nadab and Abihu..
Nice depictions.
Two other sons, Er and Onan, have a similar prophetic symbolism, but probably not as easily depicted on canvas as Nadab and Abihu.

Thanks, Alba. To me, Tissot’s greatest strength, displayed again and again, is his analysis of the scene: what is the key central feature of this story? More often than not, he seems to come closest to capturing it.

God set unequivocally here at the beginning the standard for punishing inappropriate worship. The major prophets’ reports of how Temple worship ultimately devolved offer stark justifications.

not as easily depicted on canvasI can only post that which I can find....although there is indeed one--and only one--Bible story with plenty of art which I refuse altogether to publish. You know your Bible well enough that ultimately you could guess which one. I'm willing to offer a hint....

A very good,
though incorrect, guess. You are right that there is a moral component to my objection, but it's a different one than your surmise.
